Jackie walks back into the shed and sits in one of the chairs just staring at the Trumpy in disbelief. “Hey girl, when you going to tell me about HogBitch?". Roxanne asks her. “Nothing to tell, just a nickname I got long ago from a few friends” Jackie tells her as she recalls the race days with a screwed up face. “Nice kid girl, so you going to tell me about this dude called Rat and this bike?". Roxanne asks her. “Nope it’s in the past now!". Jackie says.
Roxanne knew she wasn’t getting anywhere fast so she offered to get them a coffee while she did the quote for Trent. Jackie nods but doesn’t look her way as she walks around the bike checking it over. Roxanne returned after razzing up Jackie’s kids inside in jest. The youngest of Jackie’s kids was dynamite and had the mean attitude but it was all for show. Jackie could hear Taylor from the shed and yells out to Roxanne. “Kick her ass into the next season girl or put some super glue on those lips of hers”. She could hear Roxanne giving Rambo shit and she only wonders if Roxanne encourages the kid to be like that as she shakes her head. “Man that girl is just like someone else I know, I wonder where she gets it from!". As Roxanne brings out the coffee’s with a grin. “So how long before you think this punk’s bike is going to be ready?". She asks Jackie. “Hard to say Roxanne because the last time I saw this bike I was underneath it right!". Jackie said with hurt in her voice. Roxanne freaks at that remark and changed the subject. “Bet it can go like the clappers girl?". Roxanne repliesto side step the issues. “Fuck this bike could go, I wonder if I can make her sing again?. Jackie sighs. Jackie stands by the tank and as if the black paint wasn’t there anymore her memories roll back to the day the racing paint job was finished. She grabs a black spray can shaking it vigorously to touch and cover up the colours staring at her. Roxanne watch's her as she leans back in the chair taking a call for an extra cleaning job. Jackie crouches down on the other side of the bike and is checking out the damage that is still visible when Roxanne sees Jackie throw a spanner at the wall. “Geez girl you alright, settle down! Roxanne says still yakking on the phone not sure what is going on with her over this bike. “Wrong spanner!". Jackie quipped. Roxanne finished up her call and peers over the bike to see Jackie just sitting, leaning up against the bike just staring at the deep scratches in the chrome. Roxanne walks around and crouch's down to talk to her. “Hey I didn’t know the punk’s bike was going to cause you so much trouble, I’m sorry girl, I didn’t know!". Roxanne says as she gives her a hug. “You going to tell me what this is all about or what Jackie? Jackie composes herself and nods. Roxanne helps her up and she asks if she can borrow her phone to ring the punk before she forgets. Jackie leans up against the workshop and as someone answers the phone Jackie’s eyes go real wide as she looks at Roxanne. Roxanne watchs Jackie talk to the young punk and he is in a royal flap and would ring her tomorrow. As she hands Roxanne back her phone she says, “I know that fucking voice, that was the Ratman that answered the punk’s phone. Roxanne has that stunned look on her mug and makes the comment, “must be at his old man’s!". Jackie takes a deep breath as she locks the shed. Roxanne laughs and grabs the Jackie's kid in a head lock to say, “now what are you going to do, you young pup? Jackie laughs at them and gives her youngest a mock kick up the ass while Roxanne has her. Roxanne is rubbing her knuckles on her head telling her to behave or she will be sleeping in the shed permanently. Later that evening Roxanne asks Jackie again to tell her about the bike days. Jackie got up and went to her room. She returns with an album and hands it to Roxanne. The pages were real worn and some even had grease smears on them as she looks at a Trumpy that had seen better days. “Geez girl, your hair was pretty long back then! Roxanne laughs looking at Jackie and back at the photos that are over twenty years old. Roxanne turns the page and sees the Bro's and track pictures at different meets. There was one photo and Roxanne pulls up the album to get a better look. “Fuck is that you racing? Roxanne exclaims in astonishment. Jackie laughs. “Blow me down that dude looks like the punk kid!". “When did you first know, when you saw the punk or the bike girl?". Roxanne asks Jackie. “Bit of both really but I wasn’t sure until I felt the numbers under the paint work”, she replies. “Well if the punk is anything like his old man I take it that this Ratman was a ratbag in his day”, as Roxanne looks at the racing photos and her wins. “Ratbag huh now that's a fucking understatement, why do you think we called him Rat?". Jackie says with a grin. “You know what happens when you are cornered by a rat Roxy?. Jackie laughs with a grin. “You run like fucking hell if you can!" Roxanne grins. “You got that right girl!" Replies Jackie. “Hey what’s this one?" as Roxanne passes the album to show her the photo. Jackie closes the book putting it aside and changes the subject but Roxanne wasn’t buying it this time. “You know what girl, is this why your pissed off all the time for no reason?". Roxanne asks her. Jackie doesn't say anything. “Man you tell that kid of yours not to bottle shit up and now who is doing it?". “What are you going to do if Rat comes around for a visit out of curiosity huh?". Roxanne quizzes her. “He won’t, so don’t bloody read anything into this or go planning anything so back off!". Jackie says with a slight hint of annoyance. “Chill out woman, I wouldn’t do that to you!". Roxanne says. “Yea right, I know you!". Jackie smiles. “Twenty odd years is a long time and things change but somethings never change for some!". Jackie tells Roxanne. “Well what happened on that race day Jackie, at least tell me that bit!". Roxanne replies rolling herself another smoke. Jackie frowns as her memory painfully rolls back and she looks at Roxanne with intense eyes. “I HIT THE WALL END OF STORY!". |
